Team “Super Workies”

In July 2016 the Toronto Workers Club Group handed creative control to our team. The only conditions…they could have one Saturday a month to introduce a fun atmosphere between themselves, customers and the community.

The first of those creative days was “Frankenstein Day”. They brought in a frankenstein-day_2016_photo-galleryclassic hearse, implemented some themed cocktails and dressed in their best Frankenstein impressions possible. With a little encouragement we let the customers vote for their choice of Best Dressed Team Member. There were three clear cut winners… 1st place: Marissa Rawnsley; 2nd place: Ashlea Wheeler; 3rd place: Kim Werner. Frankenstein Day was the start of something fantastic within each staff member.

From there we went to Super Heroes and Comics. Each of them could impersonate their favourite Comic Book character or Super Hero for the day. We had a few Captain America’s, Wonder Women, Cat Women, Clarke Kent’s and many other interpretations. Comic Day related to the customers and their children. Bringing smiles and happiness to many little Super Heroes who also took part in the day. Again, customers could vote for their choice of Best Dressed Team Member. Another three clear cut winners comic-day_gallery_1were determined…1st place: Captain America (Simon Biggs); 2nd place: Cat Woman (Charmaine Young); 3rd place: Wonder Woman (Katerina Massey). A Batman quote could sum up the staff participation in Comic Day in one line, “It’s now who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me”.

The outcome of Comic Day gave the staff an insight into the positive influence they actually have on the Lake Macquarie community and the families that patron the Club. This gave them all a renewed boost of motivation and participation.

Halloween concepts were implemented over a three day spook-tacular period. Team dress-up was only one night, but again they over indulged and encouraged customer participation of both the young and old. All members were up on the regular voting procedure and a new vhalloween_2016_gallery1oting strategy was implemented so again, they could pick the Best Dressed. This time the prizes went to…1st place: Trick & Treating Witch (Vicki Williams); 2nd place tie was between:
Cafe Kitty (Marissa Rawnsley) & Green Horned Lady (Livia McEwan); 3rd place: Luigi (Simon Biggs).

With brand new concepts, dress-up ideas  and an open creative flair, these staff members have planned the next 12 months which will be enticing to all!

Full photo galleries of each event can be found here. They’re also available on Facebook for sharing and showing your love!

Life Membership Awarded

Cheryl Thompson – Life Member   Toronto Golf Club 8 June 2016

Congratulations to Cheryl Thompson on recognition of your long history of achievements in the Toronto Golf Club and its predecessor Kilaben Bay Golf Club.

Cheryl’s Parents Cec & June Halloran introduced her to our founding club at Kilaben Bay, where Cec signed her up and paid her membership dues of 10/- when she was 12 years old.  It was a golfing family with Helen her Sister and her Brother Max all making their mark as Junior Champions.  Since then she has achieved many golfing records:

  • Cheryl participated in Junior Schoolgirls competition and was selected in the State Junior Coaching Squad during her teens. She qualified 7th in the State Junior Championships.
  • She was a Foursomes Championships co-winner over 10 times between 1966 and most recently in 2015, and a co-winner of the Mixed Foursomes Championships many times from 1973 to 2009.
  • An Annual Medal winner in 1979 and 2000
  • Club Champion in 1979-1980, 1983 and 2005.
  • Winner of Captains Trophy, Presidents Trophy (3 times), Consistency Trophy, Mary Woodward Trophy (twice), Melva Henry Trophy (1979); Prosper Ellis Trophy; co-winner of the 4-Ball Match Play KO (twice as recently as 2015) and Singles K.O. Match Play winner (3 times).
  • An integral member of the Toronto Ladies Pennant Teams over the years.

However this award is not based on longevity in the club, nor on golfing achievements; there is a set criteria that needs to be met and Cheryl has well and truly achieved those over the years.  Her commitment to Toronto Golf Club, has seen her persist in taking the culture of our club forward from those early days.  In addition to her golfing achievements, Cheryl has volunteered her energies and time to serving the golfing community.

  • She acted as handicapper for 2 years (1999 – 2000),
  • Captain for 9 years (2001 – 2009),
  • District Representative for Toronto.
  • She has devoted innumerable voluntary hours in the promotion of golf, sacrificing her own leisure time,  and continues to support new Committees by sharing her knowledge of golf and procedural matters.
  • Volunteered many hours and donated trees and plants for the garden working bees, organised by the ladies in earlier years.
  • Holds Rules Accreditation and continues to advise on rulings and assist others with her professional and technical knowledge.
  • Maintained our Honour Boards, recording both Men and Women winners. (These records would have been lost except for her diligent record-keeping and commitment to Toronto Country Club’s history.)
  • Cheryl also ensures that our patron Melva Henry is kept involved in the club, and is integral in keeping the history of our Toronto Country Club alive.

Working life, family, commitments to the local community and life’s unexpected highs and lows, reduced her frequency of play from time to time, but not her unwavering commitment to Toronto Country Club or service to the District Committee, but most importantly to the lady membership – an invaluable dedicated contribution for the betterment of the Golf Club and golfing community.

Cheryl is held in the highest esteem by all Toronto and Hunter District Golf club members, and is considered to be a person of admirable integrity and loyalty.

Her professional technical skills and administrative knowledge she shares with a generosity of spirit, encouraging and guiding new and older members.  Last but certainly not least, her positive attitude under life’s adversities is an inspiration to all who know her!

An initiative commenced by our past President Faye Butler, and Captain Sue Puddey in May 2015, has been carried on by the present committee to ensure that these wonderful achievements are recognised. Today this has been realised.

Congratulations Cheryl, we laud you and are proud to have you numbered in our midst and are truly excited to see you recognised today for your inspirational involvement in our great club and for the part you have played in making it a great club.

It is with great pleasure that Toronto Country Club awards Life Membership to Cheryl Thompson.

$127K TAB Win at Toronto Workers

Four friends. $5 per week. Pick 6 bet. $127K win.

Each week Robert Ryan, Milton Mudford, Ron Boslem and Wal McCarty meet in the Club for their $5 pick 6 bet. Randwick races definitely put on a show for them as these gentlemen claimed 20.83% of the dividend, returning $127,686.23 as a win!

This morning, Chief Financial Controller was pleased to present (three of the four) gentlemen with the winning cheque!

“We’ve been doing this together for the past 18 months with small wins here and there, but this week it finally paid off”, Robert said.

Matt Falloon: Balloon Extraordinaire

He’s travelled the world doing what most of us cringe at, balloon twisting. That’s not all he does, add a little height and magic and you’ve got balloon magic shows, giant balloon sculptures and balloon decorations. While adding a mix of art, comedy, puppetry and magic he will add fun to any event.

Matt has been entertaining audiences for over a decade. Starting in Sydney he soon became an international super start. Some of his accolades include winning places in Missouri 2013, New York 2014 and his most renown reward of first place for a small sculpture in Las Vegas 2015.

Now Matt brings his talent to Toronto Workers Club. Saturday 26 March (Easter Saturday) from 6pm the kids can meet Matt in person, enjoy some balloon entertainment and check out his most recognised trick…getting inside a giant balloon!

Even better is that the kids eat free (under 12 years of age) on Saturday evenings from 5.30pm. So why not book a table for the family and witness some international balloon talent. This is a special appearance by Matt and we’re not sure when he’s going to sculpt his way back to The Workies.

You can find the Facebook Event Invitation here, so be sure to invite your friends and family and ring the Club to make your reservation.

But for now, I’ll leave this here. Just for a sneak peak… Matt Falloon on Channel Nine Mornings Show.

Happy Early Balloon Twisting Easter,
